Ever since Ava started crawling and moving around she has had a really hard time sleeping at night. As soon as she wakes up in the night she immediately stands up in her crib. Mat and I, being the first time parents that we are, immediately would go in and lay her down. Well Ava is very very smart and as you can imagine she had Mat and I pretty much wrapped around her finger. She knew that when she got up we would come in, and it took Mat and I a few weeks of sleepless nights to realize that this isn't working. The other issue was that Ava really would only fall asleep if I was nursing her. Well, obviously Mat then couldn't put her to bed, and I realized that the more she depended on me to put her to sleep, the harder it would be to break that habit. I guess these are all things you realize and learn for the next kid? Last night we decided to remedy these sleep problems and came up with a plan. Basically Ava needs to learn to put her self to sleep. So, we kept her in her crib, let her cry, and would go up every 10 mins to tell her she was okay and we loved her. Last night this lasted for 50 minutes.... She is a stuburn little girl :) Tonight was a little easier with 18 minutes. So are we getting more sleep? Well Ava is... last night she slept from 8:30-4:40 without waking up! Am I getting more sleep? Not so much, Ava is attached to her giraffe Sophie, which is very cute, but Sophie squeaks. Does it wake Ava up? Of course not. Does it wake me up? YES! I hear this squeak on the monitor in the middle of the night. I hate to take her toy away because at this point it is her "security blanket". We will see if I can withstand the squeak, and if not we may need to buy a Sophie the giraffe specifically for the crib in which we do a little "surgery" and make the toy stop squeaking! After all that rambling, I leave you with a picture of how Ava fell asleep tonight.... we like to say that she is practicing her yoga.... if you can't see in the picture, she has one leg forwards and one leg behind her... can't be comfortable! Keep your fingers crossed for us that our sleepless nights get better!
